Inland from the Tuscan coast of Cecina (13 km) lies the hill town of Montescudaio. It is characterised by fresh sea breezes. Its strategic position made it an important castle during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the old town centre still bears traces of those times. Its geographic position and its splendid natural environment make it ideal for a holiday which alternates the seaside with the hills. Numerous annual fairs and sporting events are held – cinema, music, theatre and exhibitions in the piazzas make summer in Montescudaio lively and gay. Shops for all basic necessities and some excellent restaurants are to be found in the town. Not to be missed in the middle of August is “Vino estate” (“Wine Summer”), which is held in the centuries-old municipal park “Boschetto”. Every year, another and more important date for wine enthusiasts is fixed for the first Sunday in October. A wine fest featuring local cuisine and tasting provided by the growers takes place in the square in front of the castle. Good wines and home-cooking make for a different kind of weekend.
