Cecina
The area surrounding the town extends over a gentle plain in the upper Maremma crossed by the last stretch of the River Cecina and along the coast for about 10 km. Its position between the hills and the vast pine-wood-bordered beach makes it a favourite tourist venue known all over Europe. Its history goes back to Etruscan and then Roman times at the building of a villa by Albino Cecina, whose ancestor, Licinio, appears on the municipal coat of arms. Cecina Castle was the fief of the della Gherardesca family during the Middle Ages. Towards the end of the 1500’s, the territory belonged to the Medici who built a port at the mouth of the River Cecina and the Magona iron foundry to produce cast iron using raw materials from the Isle of Elba.
