Orciatico
Orciatico is an ancient medieval village. Its castle, which was founded by Longobards in the seventh century, was the outmost bulwark of the valley of the river Era. For this reason, Volterra, Pisa, and Florence contended it continually.
Today, the village has little more than 200 friendly inhabitants. Orciatico is surrounded by vast woods. It may well be the starting point of full immersions in uncontaminated nature, which shows suggestive natural phenomena (such as the emission of carbon dioxide at 'I Borboi') and in which remains of the time gone by are strewn, such as the fortress of Pietracassa (a medieval castle, whose ruins dominate the valley of the torrent Fosce from the top of a wooded hill) or the windmills (the ruins of which can be seen).
In the village, there are two grocer's, a bar, a restaurant, the post office, a tennis court. A town with all shops (Laiatico) is 7 km away, and all supermarkets are within 10 minutes by car (La Rosa).
Orciatico is located in the heart of Tuscany in a central position between historical towns (Florence, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, San Gimignano) and is not far from the sea.
In spite of this, the village is not a touristic place, and offers an agreably peacefull stay.
